DARTS--Why Wednesday?
December 27, 2009
The WAMO Dart Committee spent many hours considering and discussing its options for the 2010 Tournament. The decision to expand to Wednesday evenings was not made quickly or taken lightly! Here are the facts that led the WAMO Dart Committee to make this decision.

Since the first tournament was held at Kalahari in 2006 we have had unprecedented growth in tournament entries. In 2006, we needed 180 dart boards at Kalahari which fit nicely; by 2009 we needed 240 dart boards to accommodate the growth of entries. This facility was booked several years in advance.

WAMO listened to hundreds of complaints from tournament participants who were very unhappy with the crowded conditions. WAMO also had to take safety issues into account. We were over capacity in all rooms and we were very lucky that no emergencies occurred.

We knew that we could not put dart throwers in this situation again so we began figuring out ways to solve the problem. WAMO has never limited entries in the past and we came up with no acceptable ways to do it now. If we went to a system of accepting entries on a first come basis, we could be eliminating entire league systems.

We then looked at what had worked for both WAMO and NDA in the past. Both had started out as weekend tournaments and have expanded due to entry growth. NDA has grown to a full week event. WAMO went from a Saturday, Sunday event with Friday night luck of the draw to an event encompassing four full days.

The same things that were considered when WAMO expanded to a Friday night start, a Friday morning start, a Thursday evening start and finally a Thursday morning start were considered in this decision to go to Wednesday evenings. All of the changes above were made over roughly a 10-year period and each one allowed the tournament to grow.
